I completely agree with you. However, lest anyone think the rest of the country is powerless, there are imperfect ways to fight back. Californians could, theoretically, still purchase cars outside of the state for example. I think the commerce clause would likely protect that solution.

Also, other states, let's say Texas or Florida, could pass a law saying the speed control devices are NOT allowed in cars manufactured or sold in those states. Just as car manufacturers can't afford to ignore California and likely won't willingly make different versions of the same car for other states, they also wouldn't be able to afford to ignore the Texas or Florida markets. In which case, they'd make both cars and little states could still get the sane version.

Unfortunately, this is directly relevant to your point of over regulation. We'd then have two new regulations and cars would be more expensive for everyone.... because of California.

Very astute analysis, Jason. Enduring your car beeping at you when you go 56 in a 55 speed limit is bad, but not the real issue. Overregulation is the real issue.

Tell California to go jump... I like Jason's idea below!

My car would never beep, I never speed! Polite car, like me…

I’ll just keep rebuilding my old car over and over.

I’m certain the technology to implement this fun feature already exists in today’s cars, particularly ones like Tesla. No new hardware required. All it would take is a firmware/software update either done remotely via the WiFi/internet or when you take your car in for service.

My 2016 Silverado has this as an optional feature, I turned it on by mistake once. Annoying as f**k, beeping like crazy whenever I went 1 mph over. Pulled over and switched it off immediately

My gut reaction is that magically, government own vehicles and personal vehicles owned and operated by legislators will be exempt. This is always how the scam works. Remember Gavin Newsom's mask that he wore at the French Laundry restaurant? Right, me neither.

So true. You can bet that none of those government limos and black SUVs are going to be doing any beeping at their drivers and passengers.

In defense of this, rideshare drivers have to follow the speed limit. So do some others. And some of us take the bus or train because we care about other people’s safety 🤣

Speaking about cars, my ”half-country” (Wallonia 🫤) will steal the right to drive my car in 2030 because it is petrol fueled. It is 33 years old and perfectly running. And I will NOT buy an electric one, even if I had the money for !

Absolutely right about ”Brussels effect” (living 45 miles south of it, I’m in ”good” position to know...) Europeans dive into slavery too, without even seeming to notice. Looks like every day comes with a new crap.

”Frog theory”... or maybe is it overwhelming and people are not capable anymore to revolt...

I think perhaps the US have still a chance to pull themselves together with the elections. In Europe, not a chance through elections. And so it will be either a bloodbath or the return to the Middle Ages.
